Regarding March 11, 2011 Japanese Earthquake

Dear Friends of World Campus International,

The shocking earthquake hitting the north-east part of Japan has caused massive destruction to the region. Currently, the Japanese national and local governments are working to assess the degree of damage.

Though there are areas of Japan that have been severely affected, all of our partner communities seem to have avoided tragedy. Currently, we do plan to facilitate the World Campus – Japan program from June 23 thru August 30.

Because the damages are reported in the northern region of Japan, and our community partners are located in central to western Japan, we are confident that our summer program will not be affected by the earthquake.

We have already contacted several community partners who are hosting our summer program and confirmed that they are OK and not severely or at all affected by these tragic events. We will continue to reach out to the rest of our community partners and communicate to you via this website any updated information.

暑い夏のお祭り！

暑い夏の日、我孫子駅のすぐ横で“かっぱ祭り”が開催されました。ワールドキャンパス2010年夏プログラムも終わりに近づき、日に日に忙しいスケジュールになってきました。

私たちが何をしたかをお話する前に、“かっぱ祭り”について説明したほうが良いですよね？そして、“かっぱ”が何なのかも説明しておきます。“かっぱ”は水の中に住む生き物で、蛙に鳥のくちばしが付いて、頭の上にお皿がのっているような不思議な姿をしています。

“かっぱ祭り”は我孫子市でとても大切なお祭りです。私たちも参加させていただいたミュージックパフォーマンスやパレード、たくさんの出店、そして竹で作ったキャンドルホルダーで公園を飾り、日本的な風景で締めくくります。私たちもキャンドルの準備をお手伝いしました。

ここで説明したように“かっぱ祭り”では人生のお祝いをしているのです。プログラム参加者はこのお祭りに参加するだけでなく、お祭りの準備も手伝うことができました。

我孫子市の人たちが一年を通して、このお祭りのためにどのように準備をしているのかを見ることができたのは良い経験でした。当日、プラン通りにお祭りがいくよう彼らは一生懸命です。

みんなで“かっぱ祭り”を盛り上げ、楽しむことができました。我孫子市の:“かっぱ祭り”は、この日とても国際的でした。

お湯を沸かすことの意味。

とても日本的なを文化体験をしました。河童祭りのリハーサル（これについては今後のブログで紹介します。）
をし、伝統的な踊りを習い、フラダンス教室の体験もありましたが、この日のハイライトと言えば…茶道です！

茶道について今まで聞いたことのない人のために、ここで少し説明しておきます：

『茶道は日本の文化でとても特別な催しです。お茶を振る舞う人たちは細かいところまで時間をかけて完璧になるよう準備をします。人の出会いはその瞬間に一度きりあるもので、全く同じような状態で起こることはない。だからこそ、その時の茶道で一つ一つの動きに心をこめて丁寧に行うという教えが茶道にはあるそうです。茶道は茶室という茶道のために作られた部屋で行われます。』

プログラム参加者は浴衣を着させてもらい、お湯を沸かしお茶を入れるというだけではなく、もっと深い意味を持った『茶道』という日本文化を体験することができました。
