2012 WCJ Session 2 experience

In Arao, our participants will be greeted by the city mayor and visit some of the unique cultural sites, such as a Japanese sword smith and “Iai” demonstration. They will also have an interaction in a local elementary school.

In Kumamoto, our participants will visit the Japan’s only hospital which accepts “abandoned babies” with various reasons and listened to the doctor who started this baby drop off concept. They will also have an opportunity to explore the Kumamoto city with a group of local university students.

2012 WCJ Session 1 experience

In Omura, our participants will have a chance to experience “Japanese elementary school and Jr. high school life” by visiting their schools and participating in their school activities. They will also have a day in the city of Nagasaki to visit the peace museum, listen to the A-bomb survivor speech, and visit the Dutch/Chinese districts.

In Omuta, our participants will have “in depth” and unique interactions with two of their elementary schools and high school and discussions regarding the education systems in Japan and various countries.

Pedro’s Testimony


I took part in WCI 2010’s 3rd Session in Ueda and Toride.

Being part of this program brought many amazing changes and opportunities. At first, I could have not imagined how this whole experience would be: the multicultural staff and participants, being in a foreign country with such a unique culture and customs and the thing that turned out to be my favorite, being inside the life of a regular Japanese host family.

Through WCI, not only we could have access to facilities and do things a regular visitor wouldn’t be able to do, but we can interact and live with locals. Additionally, even though it takes place in Japan, the program is not all about Japan; it’s about learning to see the world with a more internationalist point of view, knowing other cultures and losing biased prior views which we build throughout our lives.
During the program I stayed with two host families, both were really nice and open minded to the “flaws” that we foreigners commit in Japan, such as using the toilet slippers inside the house! But with one of the host families, the relationship I built with them was so intense and strong that our relation got stronger with time. We exchanged mails and I was able to visit them one more time after the program. I such a great time during New Year’s holidays with them and they made me feel as a member of the family!

In a nutshell, the program made me open my mind to the differences, correct my pre conceptions about Japan and other countries, and most importantly, made me leave a part of my heart with each of the good friends I made there.

日本料理クッキング

大阪府吹田市のホストファミリーとお別れする前日、山田にある未来館で数種類の日本料理を作る体験をしました。私たちは、たこ焼き（小麦粉作ったで小さい丸型にたこ、しょうが、野菜が入ったもの）、焼きそば（野菜炒めと美味しい麺）、いちご大福（甘い苺をあんこで包み、その上からやわらかいお餅で包んだもの）。その他にも、世界的に良く知られている巻き寿司も作りました。中に新鮮な魚と野菜を入れてご飯とのりで巻きます。

日本料理を作っていておもしろかったのは、私たちにとっていろいろな発見と違った経験になりました。私は日本人が茹でた野菜とツナで巻き寿司を作るのを初めて見ました。それは私にとっては新しい発想でした。私がデンマークで習った巻き寿司とは全く違っていました。

関西で有名なたこ焼きを作ったのも素晴らしい経験になりました。ワールドキャンパスのメンバーほとんどがとっても気に入っていました。私の場合はとても楽しい経験でした。それは私のホストファミリーが人気のあるたこ焼屋さんを２軒持っているので、この後で彼らのお店を手伝うことができました。

私のお気に入り料理は、いちご大福です。とてもおもしろい食感でした。（ワインガムよりもやわらかい、でもしっかりしている）そして何より私の大好きな果物、美味しい苺が入っているからです。デンマークが誇りを持つデンマーク産の苺と同じぐらい美味しかったです。

日本から家に帰ってから、ホストファミリーや吹田市で習ったように日本料理を作ることにしました。デンマークのみんなもとても気に入ってくれました。ワールドキャンパスに参加していなければ、このような料理を発見することはなかったでしょう。そして、日本で実際に習える機会があったことにいつまでも感謝します。

決して忘れない経験

2011年6月6日～12日、豊田市で私はとても素晴らしい道山ファミリーのお宅でホームスティしました。最初の日、ホストマザーとホストシスターが『紙芝居』が展示されている博物館へ連れて行ってくれました。そこには、たくさんの紙芝居道具があり、そのように紙芝居を使うのか説明もありました。『紙芝居』とは物語を伝えるものです。四角い箱の真ん中にドアがあり、そこから絵やお話が書いた紙を順番にめくっていきます。この経験ができて、とてもラッキーでした。私は子供たちの前で紙芝居を読みました。子供たちは大喜びで私はとても嬉しかったです。私のホストマザーは紙芝居の先生なので、私にたくさん技術を教えてくれました。紙芝居についてたくさん学ぶことができました。


紙芝居をした後、私たちは豊田市美術館へ行きました。そこにはオランダの有名な画家、ヨハネス　フェルメールの作品がありました。彼の作品はエレガントで現実性がありみあす。私たちは全ての作品を楽しみ、感銘を受けながら素敵な午後の時間を過ごしました。


8月8日、ホストシスターが私を長島スパーランドに連れて行ってくれました。日本で最長のジェットコースターがある遊園地です。私とホストシスターはジェットコースターに乗るのが大好きです！私たちは可能な限り多くのジェットーコースタに乗りました。全部で7種類のジェットコースターがあり、最も高いジェットコースターには2回も乗りました。日本でこんな経験ができるなんて、とても興奮しました。驚きもいっぱいあり、私たちは本当に楽しい時間をそこで過ごしました。
